Your USCG Tug Association has embarked on a new and historically significant operation. As many of you already know as regular visitors to our now-famous web site, the CGTA has, after 5 years and 3 ship-attempts, finally acquired the former USCGC Apalachee (WYTM 71). Our intention is to preserve and promote her as a CG and national maritime museum and training platform for the next generation of Coasties, Navy, and Merchant Marine sailors. The vessel was donated to us for this purpose, but your Tug Association needs your help to carry on the maintenance and preservation of the ship.

This project was discussed in detail at our 4th Reunion in October at Cape May , NJ (check out our 2008 reunion info on the web site). Some 50 members and spouses (our best turn out yet) were present at the time and this effort was the highlight of our meeting. Following a detailed briefing of the plans by myself – for the ship, and Doug O’Dell – for the Cleveland connection, the membership unanimously voted to follow through and acquire the ship. Members agreed that this would be a win-win situation for all; the CGTA would save the “Apple” and turn her into an operational museum, the City of Cleveland and the renovated Whiskey Island CG Station would have a permanent, additional display for the Cleveland waterfront renaissance, and our members would have a permanent legacy to visit.

With this decision, the immediate need for continuous funding of this monumental undertaking becomes a primary issue. While we have always depended on member donations to support our activities, this project requires a long-term commitment from the membership. To that extent, the members at the reunion meeting also unanimously decided to institute annual membership dues of $25.00 per year. With our current +/- 475 members at $25 each, that’s an extraordinary $11,875 per year. With current fund raising efforts, grant prospects, and cost sharing with our Cleveland partners, we can make this dream a reality.

Please “saddle up” and support your CGTA with your annual dues contributions. Keep in mind, dues and contributions to support our efforts are fully tax deductible. An annual dues card and donation letter will be sent to all those who participate, along with the names of those in support on a plaque on board. Please help us save the last pristine USCG 110-ft tug from becoming a reef or scrap. Please send your dues and donations to:
